Frequently Asked Questions

Why a mouse for a logo? The mouse seemed fitting for several reasons. Michaelangelo said his inspiritation came from angelo called genis (that is the origin of the term genius). Since I can't fit in his shoes, let alone his socks, I decided my inspiration was on a much smaller scale. Thus was born the Mystery Mouse. A very cute and endearing animal who can also be a huge pest and pain leading me into situations that can be wonderful or embarrassing.
Why have you not settled down with just one or two medias?
From fine art, to ink, oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and wood and stone, you work in so many. Most artists experiment with many medias and arts. Da Vinci and Michaelango did various things, including writing poetry. I find that I use the materials that best make a statement and help me get the message of the work to the viewer.
How does the media affect the message?
I use oils to convey softer impacts--what I call the "warm fuzzy" feel to a work.
Pen and Ink is used to make stronger statements, stronger ideas, or themes. For example, in a portrait it would be used to show strength of character rather than beauty.
Watercolor falls between the previous two and can be used for a variety of emotional and intellectual impacts. The list of media goes on, each with its own advantages and limitations.

Your work experience includes teaching kindergarten through college and private lessons. How has this impacted your art?
I got into teaching through necessity. It helped pay the bills. Once involved with teaching, no matter how reluctantly, I fell in love with it. I loved watching my students grow and gain confidence. Teaching has also helped me grow as an artist. It has allowed me to see the world through many different eyes, cultures, and life experiences. I have learned so much from my students, and I cannot ever imagine not teaching. The rewards are so great. |
What is your goal as a teacher?
I call my technique of teaching the purple cow technique. If your goal as an artist is to create purple cows, I will show you how to do the best purple cows you can. I have no goal to turn my students into mini-me's.
If you are not trying to teach your students a rigid style, what are you hoping to give them to become better artists? I believe I am giving them tools for their creative "tool Box". I teach a variety of techniques and approaches they can use or leave in the box. They will have the "right" tool to handle a variety of problems and techniques.

One of your degrees is in history. How does this influence your art?
My interest and love of history has enriched my life and art in so many ways. I have been able to travel and give tours of some of the most inspiring museums of France and Italy. My passion for history has opened my eyes to the meanings and the whys of art--not just the beauty and the techniques. History makes the work and the artist come alive and inspires me.

What advice do you have for other artists?
- Really, really look at what you are doing, regardless of your style. I would have my husband pose for a beginning drawing class I taught for four years at Gila Pueblo College. During that time, and with multiple drawings from each student, only one student noticed he only had four fingers on one hand. Everyone else drew the missing finger. Never assume--always observe.
- Take classes if possible. Ask questions. Visit galleries. Read books--not just art books, because inspiration comes in many forms.
- Open yourself to different experiences. Sit in on a free lecture. Travel. Try new things.
- Talk to strangers
- Enjoy life.
